Why Worry About Sexually Transmitted Diseases
You may have heard about the increase of sexually transmitted diseases in people ages 15 - 29. You may even know some people who are infected or you may even be infected. Is this something you should be worried about or is it just someone else’s problem? The answer is yes, and yes! You should be worried - for yourself, for your kids, for your parents, and for the community at large. Sexually transmitted diseases and infections (STD/I) may affect us all at one time or another - directly or indirectly.
According to the National Institutes of Health there are twenty STDs. You have heard of the most common STD/I like gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, chlamydia, and HIV but there are others to worry about as well. STDs are caused by bacteria, parasites, and viruses. Most STDs are equal opportunity offenders in that they affect both men and women however women may be affected more seriously by some STDS. Some STDs may not have symptoms that are obvious in women so they may go undetected until the infection has reached other parts of the body or may affect a woman’s ability to bear children.

You should get tested as soon as you think you are having symptoms and treated as soon as possible.

Increasing numbers of chlamydia infections have made it the most widespread STD in the USA. In 1997 there were 537,904 reported diagnoses, corresponding to a rate of 205.5 per 100,000 population. However, by 2007 the annual total had more than doubled to 1,108,374 and the rate per 100,000 had risen to 370.2.

STD’s are rising faster than ever. It is common sense to simply take a home test if you have had unprotected intercourse.

The problem with STD/STD is that many do not have symptoms. The best way to avoid them and their potential life-long consequences is to avoid having sex. Let’s be realistic though - that is not going to happen. If you do have sex make sure that you have had a discussion with the person FIRST. Make sure that he or she is as interested in your physical health as in your physical body. No one is worth a potential death sentence in exchange for a few minutes of “pleasure”.

I would suggest that you get a test for gonorrhea or chlamydia at your doctor’s office or local health department. Many places have free screening tests and free treatment and do not require appointments. The results are usually available within 48 - 72 hours and you have the benefit of a live person who can talk to you about ways to prevent recurrence.
